About Us

The purpose of SOBRIETATIS SOCIETAS is to carry the message of recovery in 12 step programs to those still suffering. In our experience, this is largely focused on the Christian Spiritual Works of Mercy. The focus is on the virtue of Kindness which is rooted in the One Truth. It is a simple program for those who are willing to learn to be honest with themselves and others. It is for those who “are willing to go to any length to get it.” It is for those of us whose experience with addiction has driven us to our knees and total surrender. It is for those of us who have found our best thinking has not worked well, and we are ready to seek the assistance from a Higher Power. 

We are of the opinion that there may be an inverse relationship between cost of recovery programs and their effectiveness. We believe the blessings of recovery are available to all who are willing to seek the truth about themselves and our addictions. We have come to realize if we don’t properly order pleasure, happiness, and joy, we will never attain joy. As St. Augustine of Hippo’s famous passage from Confessions states “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” We must realize seeking pleasure will never result in attaining true happiness and certainly not true joy. In fact, seeking pleasure will result in our being slaves to those pleasures which become vices.

SOBRIETATIS SOCIETAS intends to help carry the message of recovery by sharing our experience, strength, and hope with those who are suffering from addiction. Our view is that “a drug, is a drug, is a drug” and through the use of the ‘granddaddy’ of the 12 step programs, Alcoholics Anonymous, the message of 12 step recovery can be of great benefit to those who are suffering from various addictions. Each of our Directors and Associates have experienced the many benefits of recovery and are committed to carrying the message to those who still suffer. We are typically not paid for our efforts, but believe people of means will want to contribute to our not-for-profit to assist those less fortunate.

The men and women associated with SOBRIETATIS SOCIETAS have attained long term sobriety and have enjoyed many benefits of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. We desire to carry this cost-effective message of recovery to others. We believe the world does not do a good job of equipping people with strong moral "antibodies." The program of recovery offered through the 12 steps is an excellent means for people who seek the truth through Recovery, Unity, Service (the Three Legacies of AA). We have seen many people who come to the tables of Alcoholics Anonymous who have little or no faith in a higher power. We have found that if people acknowledge two simple things about God, (1) There is one, and (2) "You ain't it!" and are willing to tap into the wisdom of the ages offered through the program, great strides can be made for people individually.
